Sibbaldia has been published by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
(RBGE) since 2003 at a rate of one volume per year. It is the journal
dedicated to botanic garden horticulture and is written by
horticulturists and others who work in botanic gardens. The content is
intended primarily for these horticulturists but it is also of value to
botanic garden and plant collection managers. The content also appeals
to a wider audience including horticultural students, plant enthusiasts
and conservationists. Sibbaldia aims to cover all aspects of
horticulture relevant to botanic gardens including cultivation,
propagation, plant records, conservation, policies, strategies and
conventions, interpretation, education, and landscape use and management.
The importance and role of horticulturists will increase with the
adoption of international agreements such as the Global Strategy for
Plant Conservation. Botanic gardens are increasingly credited with being
the valuable resource that they are for crucial education in
biodiversity and conservation issues and those who develop and maintain
these environments need to both communicate their work and maintain and
improve their networks for learning from each other. It is very common
for skilled and knowledgeable staff in botanic gardens across the world
to hold specialist knowledge of particular plant groups, and this
knowledge is used to create spectacular botanic gardens. However, it is
not common for this knowledge to be written down and communicated to
others outside of the establishments. Sibbaldia aims to provide a
vehicle for this knowledge to be passed on.
